SND offers new, corporate memberships To news organizations in developing countries

In response to growing requests for news design assistance from visual journalists worldwide, the Society for News Design is offering “corporate memberships” in specific countries where the price of individual memberships remains out of reach for most news professionals.

An organization that applies for a corporate membership may name
three persons to represent that organization and receive SND membership benefits.

One copy of the annual “Best of Newspaper Design™” book
Access for three people to the Update newsletter PDF
Three PDFs of SND’s quarterly Design journal
Access for three to the membership area of www.snd.org
Membership discounts for three people for SND activities and events, including the Annual Workshop & Exhibition, Quick Courses and the SND.ies competition for multimedia journalism.

All SND mail and shipments will go to one organizational address. If someone listed as an SND member leaves the organization during the membership period, the organization can name another person as a replacement member.

One corporate membership costs the same as one individual SND membership: $125 for one year for newspapers of 30,000 circulation and above, and $115 per year for newspapers of less than 30,000 circulation.

SND will re-evaluate the economic progress of the eligible countries every two years and make adjustments as needed.

“We believe everyone can benefit from this change. More visual journalists gain access to the community that is SND, and we want — and need — their input as SND charts a course for its future,” said SND President Scott Goldman, senior editor/visuals at The Indianapolis Star

“In many countries around the globe journalists and designers are working for a fraction of the salary paid in Western countries,”
explains SND International Director Hans-Peter Janisch, a German design consultant.

“In some cases, monthly income is less then our current individual membership fee. It is simply not affordable for many of our colleagues. Recognizing this, SND is introducing a new model for news organizations in specific countries that meet specific income criteria (list below). In those countries, a newspaper, magazine or Web site can become an SND member through a corporate membership.”
