United Arab Emirates upholds press freedom

MEDIA WELCOMES MOHAMMAD’S INSTRUCTIONS NOT TO JAIL
JOURNALISTS CARRYING OUT THEIR DUTIES

BY SAMIR SALAMA
Bureau Chief AND BASSAM ZA’ZA’ Staff ReporterAbu Dhabi/Dubai

The initiative is an expression of [Shaikh Mohammad’s] deep belief in freedom of the press and its role in society, and underlines his support for media professionals and his keenness to provide the best working environment to help them discharge their duties.

Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foreign Minister and Chairman of National Media Council In a victory for freedom of the press in the UAE, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VicePresident and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, yesterday issued instructions that journalists in the country will not be jailed for doing their work.

The announcement was made by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister and Chairman of the National Media Council (NMC).

Shaikh Abdullah said Shaikh Mohammad issued instructions that no journalist is to be jailed for reasons related to his work, adding that there are other measures that may be taken against journalists who break the press and publication law, but not jail, WAM reported.

Shaikh Abdullah said Shaikh Mohammad has also issued instructions to the Cabinet to speed up the necessary steps to issue the new publication law in the light of the amendments made by the NMC after consulting concerned authorities.

He praised Shaikh Mohammad’s initiative, which is an expression of his deep belief in freedom of the press and its role in society, and underlines his support for media professionals and his keenness to provide the best working environment to help them discharge their duties in the best way.

Shaikh Mohammad’s instructions follow a Dubai court ruling giving two Khaleej Times journalists two-month jail terms for libelling an Iranian woman.

Essam Eisa Al Humaidan, Dubai Attorney-General, praised Shaikh Mohammad’s decision as appropriate and timely. But he cautioned journalists that it encourages them to search for the truth more and practice self-censorship without affecting the profession. The UAE Journalists Association also praised the decision.

Mohammad Yousuf, Chairman of the association, said the directive reflects the leadership’s support for the press and journalists, and its backing for freedom of speech and the right of expression. Sami Al Reyami, Editor of Emarat Alyoum, said Shaikh Mohammad’s instructions and the amendment of the Publication Law will make the UAE a bastion of press freedom. However, he said, the initiative makes it incumbent on journalists to be committed to professional ethics.

Modern Arabic Typography: Challenges and Opportunities

by Mamoun Sakkal

Do you think Arabic typography needs to evolve and move forward? If so, in what way, and how, should it be modernized?
Of course it should like everything else in life. Since typography is closely associated with the reproduction of text, it has to respond to the changing technologies for text production. This means that in addition to the ability to design appealing typefaces, designers have to know much about how these typefaces will be used and reproduced in order to provide the most appropriate design solutions for the end result to be as legible, expressive, and easy to use as possible.

What is your view on the westernisation of Arabic typography?

Is it a positive thing? MS: By itself, westernisation is not a positive development because it implies departing from the traditional forms in order to become more like the European models. However, there is a positive aspect to learning from the west and that is to set high standards for design, execution, and dedication, as well as the ability to view our own heritage with a fresh eye that can extract new values from it in order to develop it in new directions.

Problems of Arabic typefaces

Lack of variety
The number of Arabic fonts for Mac today is not very big, those for Quark Arabic being much less. If one were to be generous in their assessment, one would pick 15 usable ones.

Inconsistency in letter sizes and forms
One of the factors that contribute to the richness of Arabic calligraphy is the variety of forms of the same letter. When it comes to typefaces, disproportionate and unharmonious characters flourish; large and wide characters sitting next to nearly invisible small characters that almost disappear below 7pt. Forms of the same letter are sometimes different to the point that they do not feel like the same letter anymore.
