The international human rights organisation ARTICLE 19, has issued a manual on Freedom of Information and Investigative Journalism in the Arab world. Available online in both English and Arabic, the manual aims to equip journalists with basic skills for writing investigative reports and campaigning for their right to access information. The manual was initially developed as part of a workshop held for Iraqi journalists and ARTICLE 19 on freedom of information and investigative journalism in June of this year. In addition to ARTICLE 19 staff, Prof. Magda Abu-Fadil, Director of the American University of Beirut's Journalism Training Programme contributed to the manual. The manual introduces the concept and practices of freedom of information and investigative journalism, and explains the interactions between both, with a particular focus on the use of access to information avenues and remedies to strengthen investigative reporting. The workshop and manual were funded by the UNDP Iraq Office. They complement a wider programme of work on freedom of expression in Iraq carried out by ARTICLE 19 together with UNDP in 2006/7 and UNESCO in 2004/2005.
