TIME TO REMEMBER

8TH EDITION

FOREWORD

At a glance, as we in the newspaper business are fond of saying, this book contains the best of newspaper design from the Spring of 1986 to the Spring of 1987.

Designers have the ability to control how a message is transmitted, and thus, thow the message is received.
Every stepa a designer takes, consciously or unconsciously, says something to a reader.

These pages show us the outsanding efforts of the clearest-thinking, most creative mindes in our business, using state-0f-the-art technology to present information and chronicle history as the decade of the '80s winds down.

Beyond the selection of type, the choice of photographs, the style of illustration, the use of color, what we see is designers at work in the on-going effort to better explain the news to readers.

As you look through these pages, you will se the range of human experience transmitted through the minds and skills of some of our most talent journalist.

We hope you enjoy this book because what we are really looking at ourselves- from the Spring of 1986 to the Spring of 1987

HEADLESS BODY IN TOPLESS BAR: THE BEST HEADLINES FROM AMERICA'S FAVORITE NEWSPAPER (HARDCOVER)

From AMAZON

The book starts off with a 2-page history of the Post (mostly changes of ownership) followed by several pages bent on sliming the 1993 owner, real estate mogul Abe Hirschfield. Revenge is a dish best served cold, and the Post can't seem to get enough of laying this gentleman low. The rest of the book is devotes to covers and memorable inside pages. The chosen covers are taken from the world of politics ("The Full Monica"), sports ("May the Curse Be With You" -- odious to this Red Sox fan, but clever nonetheless) and the Mafia ("Gotti's Greatest Hits"). The selected titles also highlight the tabloid's propensity for bringing down the mighty -- be it Jim Bakker, Donald Trump or Martha Stewart -- and upping the cleavage count. Anything to get the proles to shell over a few clams. Later Post covers showed an alarming propensity to editorialize and pander to the masses in a way that goes well beyond journalistic limits of propriety. "Axis of Weasel" blares one headline from January 2003 over the photos of French and German leaders who opposed America's invasion of Iraq. While the locals must have lapped up that sentiment, after 5 years of war, the fun has gone out of it.

IRAQI PHOTOGRAPHER AWARDED

From APN

Bilal Hussein, an Iraqi photographer with Associated Press (AP) who spent more than two years in US military custody in Iraq on suspicion of being a security threat, was awarded a journalism prize by a Spanish foundation on 22 May.

The Barcelona-based Miguel Gil Moreno Foundation said the prize was given in recognition of Hussein's photographs and for all the work done by local reporters in Iraq. The award is named after Miguel Gil Moreno, a Spanish cameraman killed in 2000 while covering the Sierra Leone conflict for AP Television News. The award was created in 2002 by Spanish colleagues of Gil, in collaboration with his family, and is given each year to a war correspondent. Hussein, a 36-year-old Iraqi photographer, was unable to attend the ceremony but sent a video message expressing his appreciation.
