Advertising Conference & Expo. The World Association of Newspapers conference, to be held on 13 and 14 March in Budapest, Hungary, will examine the latest cross-media audience measurement techniques and include a report from the Media Measurement Integration Task Force, a global alliance dedicated to promoting new cross-media measurement standards

TERRORISM IS A GLOBAL CANCER

Illustration: Nino Jose Heredia/ Gulf News

By any measure, the Arab countries have emerged as the principal victims of global terror. According to some estimates, terrorism and measures aimed against it have cost the Arab states the equivalent of 1.2 per cent in annual economic growth rate since 2000.

In some Arab countries, the so-called security industry has been the fastest growing sector of the economy. Since 2001, Arab budgets to fight terrorism have quadrupled on the average.

And, yet, in many respects, these states are the least prepared to defend themselves.

The Arab states do not yet have a central database for terrorists, as do the European Union nations since 1995. A terrorist could move from one country to another without being traced.

NEW IRAQI FLAG

from Reuters

A new Iraqi flag stripped of Saddam-era symbols was hoisted over the Iraqi Cabinet building in Baghdad.
Earlier this month, parliament voted to remove Saddam-related symbols from the banner, including the three stars thought to represent the objectives of Saddam’s now outlawed Baath party.
The calligraphy of the Arabic words Allahu Akbar (God is Great), which was in Saddam’s own handwriting, was also changed to a different script. The changes were prompted by a row with Iraq's Kurdish minority, who threatened to boycott the old banner during a pan-Arab meeting in the country later on February.
