SND’S 28TH ANNUAL DESIGN COMPETITION EXPANDS SUBCATEGORIES


NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. – The Society for News Design has released its Call for Entries for the 28th annual The Best of Newspaper Design™ Creative Competition, and several categories now separate broadsheet and tabloid formats for judging.

The Creative Competition is open to all general circulation newspapers — daily or nondaily, traditional or alternative — published anywhere in the world. All entries in this juried competition must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2006, inclusive. U.S. entries must be received in Syracuse, N.Y., by January 17, 2007; entries from outside the United States must be received by January 24, 2007.

The complete set of rules and forms, in English and in Spanish and in both Quark and PDF formats, can be viewed, printed and downloaded from SND’s Web site at http://www.snd.org. Or, request a copy from SND by sending an e-mail to snd@snd.org.

Single-page entries are $12 for newspapers under 49,999 circulation and $15 for newspapers 50,000 circulation and over. Multiple-page entries are $25 and $30, respectively. The 19 categories include regularly appearing news and feature pages, regularly appearing news and feature sections, breaking news, special news, newspaper magazines, reprints, redesigns, photography, information graphics and illustration. Special news topics include the Olympics, soccer’s World Cup and the war on terrorism.

All entrants must enter the World’s Best-Designed™ Newspaper category. This mandatory category is free. Entries are evaluated on writing, visual storytelling, use of resources, execution, photography, headlines and “voice,” as well as the newspaper’s overall design.

Winning entries may receive an Award of Excellence, Judges' Special Recognition or Silver or Gold medals for outstanding work in any category. Judging will take place February 10-19, 2007, at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in Syracuse, N.Y.

Last year’s Best of Newspaper Design™ Creative Competition drew 14,610 entries and yielded 1,136 awards to 212 publications in 35 countries. Two newspapers earned the title of “World’s Best- Designed™ Newspaper.” Full-color images of the winners are displayed in the 272-page 27th edition of "The Best of Newspaper Design™", a book available from the Society at http://www.snd.org.
