The Middle East's eyes on news design

The Africa-Middle East Region of the Society for News Design is offering a new way to highlight Arabic-language newspaper titles that exhibit good design. The new online initiative recognizes newspapers and professionals from the region who are concerned with enhancing the quality of visual information for readers.

Legibility, page layout and typography are some of the factors under consideration. Each year the Society for News Design announces the World's Best-Designed newspapers. These choices are made by an international panel of judges through an annual competition. The 2007 Call for Entries and rules will be released in November.

In contrast, the new SND endeavor in the Middle East does not require entering a competition. Rather, it recognizes and honors all publications that have invested in the field of design by displaying examples of excellence online at URL.

SND's Region 20 Director, Douglas Okasaki, a senior designer at Gulf News in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, says: "The Middle East is a region that sees many new titles launched every year. These publications provide a promising future for visual journalism. By recognizing newspapers that display a high standard of design, SND hopes to encourage and commend the companies that have invested in this region."
